FAQs

What levels is this class appropriate for?

You can be an absolute beginner, a newer student, or even intermediate! Because the class is limited in size and Teacher Kwak travels with 2 teachers assisting, they are prepared to meet students where they are!

What if I sign up and then have a schedule conflict?

Tickets are non-refundable, however they are transferable. If you have to cancel, reach out as soon as possible and we MAY be able to find someone to take your spot.

What makes this different than a regular class?

This masterclass is a rare opportunity to have hands-on instruction with 3 teachers and the staff of Community Clay as needed. Each year, Teacher Kwak only travels to 1-3 states in the US, outside of these trips, you'd have to travel to Korea to get this type of instruction.

Each day will consist of 6 hours of instruction!

Topics covered:

  • History and context of the Korean approach to clay sourcing, storage and preparation
  • Spiral wedging (Gomak-milgi) and closing the spiral into a cylindrical form for more efficient centering
  • Fundamentals of centering a large mass of clay for throwing off the hump, with emphasis on relaxing the clay for better clay response
  • Exploration of sabal (teabowl) making, with a breakdown of steps to better understand each phase of the making process and finger placements
  • Korean style trimming demo using handmade tools and understanding the harmonic relationship between throwing and trimming in relation to the final form
  • Developing a more discerning “eye” for line and form by separating the structural and shaping phases of throwing
  • Demo of cylinders, plates, and teapots off the hump with advanced techniques
